Nine reasons why to instill a love of reading in your child early
Research study after research study finds that reading for pleasure results in increased empathy, improved relationships with loved ones, reductions in the symptoms of depression and dementia, and overall improved well-being.
The added benefits you gain when you love reading are:
1.) Reading challenges your child’s perspective on matters
2.) Reading brings about life as it ignites your child’s imagination
3.) Reading hones the theory of mind
4.) Reading brings about knowledge
5.) Reading expands your child’s vocabulary
6.) Reading dares your child to grow
7.) Reading sharpens your child’s memory
8.) Reading strengthens your child’s analytical and critical thinking skills
9.) Reading improves your child’s focus and concentration
How do you get your youngster excited about reading? Set a great example! Children will develop the love of reading when you cultivate the passion from early on in their lives. Children are great imitators - so give them something great to imitate.
A study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that younger Americans, aged 25-34, read just four minutes a day, while American adults over 75 read upwards of one hour a day.
That ‘4-minutes-reading-a-day’ by young American is scary to me but explains the current state of our society.
If you want to make a difference and provide a better future for you child, read to her plenty and buy her books – copiously.
I have several new children’s books out, beautifully, and colorfully illustrated. They are perfect to read-out-loud to your youngster and a great tool to instill that love for reading in her.
