Readers are smarter

Kids that read are smarter, because they have a larger set of vocabulary words and therefore a better command of the language, in both spoken and written words.

According to research studies, reading also improves your child’s fluid and crystallized intelligence. What is that? Fluid intelligence is the ability to reason and use logic and creative flexibility to solve problems in new or novel situations without reference to pre-existing knowledge. Crystallized intelligence is the ability to use knowledge, facts and skills that were previously acquired through experiences and education. Equally important, cultivating the development of fluid and crystallized intelligence helps your child to make smarter decisions about himself and those around him.

Children who grow up reading books will also read more newspapers, magazines and use their brains for intellectual pursuits.

The research on reading and being smarter is evident in study after study. Reading improves theory of mind, your child’s ability to see outside of himself, to be more empathetic with those around him and strengthens the hippocampus – the area of the brain that helps your child with memory and emotional responses.

In conclusion, reading is for the brain what bodybuilding is for muscle tissue: mind-building.
