Reading to children

When my children were small, one of our favorite things to do together was read. My son and my daughter would sit on either side of me, as we all looked at the illustrations and read the story together. My little ones would rest their heads on my shoulders, as we began our journey and opened the book. They both listened intently to each word and enjoyed showing me who was saying what and who was going where.

Sometimes we would read the same book every night for weeks, but we always took our time. That precious one hour was the most important hour of the day. You see, children are like little sponges and their minds soak up everything, so make sure it is something good. There was no hurrying through our bedtime story, oh no. My children were too smart for that. Even at the age of one, they would say, “mom, you are reading way too fast and I think we need to start over again.

Well, now I understand meditation and how important it is to quiet your mind and be present in the moment - because when you have a million other things to do at home, your whole world stops when you are reading to your child.

These are some of the best kept memories that I have with my children when they were young. Now that my children are young adults, hopefully they will carry on this wonderful bonding tradition of reading to their own children.

Stay Safe!
